20 Years Ago at Manchester Airport: A Glimpse into Aviation History
You may remember my recent trip to Manchester Airport to visit the flagship Concorde G-BOAC.
Today marks a special anniversary in the history of this iconic aircraft. On this day, twenty years ago, Manchester Airport welcomed this
icon of the skies: G-BOAC, the BAC-SNIAS Concorde 102, part of the British Airways fleet. As an aviation enthusiast, I’m thrilled to take you on a journey through its storied past.
G-BOAC: The Jewel of the British Airways Concorde Fleet
Nestled at Manchester Airport’s Runway Viewing Park, G-BOAC sits proudly on its own dedicated ‘Runway 06’. Capturing its beauty on camera can be a challenge due to the glare from its expansive white wings, but its presence is undeniably captivating.
G-BOAC holds a special place in the hearts of many. As the flagship of the British Airways Concorde fleet, it first took to the skies on February 27, 1975. After participating in the rigorous Concorde test program, it was officially delivered to British Airways on February 13, 1976.
Breaking Barriers: The Inaugural Supersonic Service
In May 1976, G-BOAC made aviation history by inaugurating supersonic trans-Atlantic scheduled services between London-Heathrow and Washington, DC. This marked the beginning of a new era in air travel, offering passengers an unprecedented blend of speed and luxury.
A Legacy of Excellence: 27 Years of Service
For 27 years, G-BOAC operated with remarkable success. Its final flight, a memorable journey from London-Heathrow to Manchester, took place on October 31, 2003. This flight marked the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter in its life as a cherished exhibit.
A Permanent Tribute at Manchester Airport
Today, G-BOAC is on permanent loan to Manchester Airport Plc and is displayed at the Runway Visitor Park. This allows aviation enthusiasts and visitors alike to get up close to this iconic aircraft and appreciate its contribution to aviation history. Please note that charges apply for visiting the exhibit.
If you ever find yourself near Manchester Airport, make sure to visit the Runway Visitor Park and pay tribute to this marvel of engineering. G-BOAC is more than just an aircraft; it’s a symbol of human achievement and the golden age of supersonic flight.
