Gloucestershire Airport’s Temporary ATC Adjustments

Gloucestershire Airport’s Temporary ATC Adjustments

Navigating Challenges:

In a dynamic and ever-evolving industry like aviation, ensuring seamless operations often means tackling unexpected challenges head-on. Gloucestershire Airport is currently navigating one such challenge, with temporary adjustments to its air traffic control (ATC) services due to a staffing shortfall.

For a period stretching across 10 weeks, the airport will experience 10 days without ATC service. This change, while significant, has been managed with a strategic approach to ensure that disruption is minimized. Here’s a closer look at how Gloucestershire Airport is handling this period and what it means for operators and passengers.

Why the Change?

The root of this temporary adjustment lies in a staffing shortage within the ATC team. With new recruits currently in training, there will be intervals when ATC services are not available. The airport’s senior leadership team foresaw this gap and implemented a comprehensive plan to mitigate its impact.

What to Expect

Starting 8 July, revised operating hours will come into effect and these will be clearly published on the airport’s website for ease of reference. Notably, even on days without ATC services, the airport remains open for business. Private flights, training activities, and club operations can still proceed with takeoffs and landings as usual.

On days when ATC is available, the service hours will be slightly adjusted: beginning 30 minutes later and concluding 30 minutes earlier than usual. This adjustment will remain in place until September.

A Proactive Approach

The airport’s leadership team has been proactive in addressing this issue. Several months ago, they developed a plan focusing on recruitment, training, and succession planning. Recognizing the importance of competitive compensation in attracting and retaining talent, new pay scales have been introduced. This move is aimed at bolstering the ATC team and ensuring long-term stability.

In addition to staffing solutions, Gloucestershire Airport has made a significant financial commitment to upgrading its infrastructure. A £500,000 investment in ATC Tower equipment underscores the airport’s dedication to maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.

#### Looking Ahead

While these changes may present a temporary inconvenience, they reflect Gloucestershire Airport’s commitment to maintaining operational integrity and safety. By investing in both people and technology, the airport is not only addressing the immediate challenge but also laying the groundwork for a robust future.

For all operators and visitors, the key takeaway is clear: Gloucestershire Airport is open and operational, with measures in place to ensure that flights can continue smoothly. The revised operating hours and updates will be readily accessible on the airport’s website, providing the necessary information to plan accordingly.

In an industry where precision and planning are paramount, Gloucestershire Airport’s approach to this staffing challenge exemplifies resilience and foresight. As the new recruits complete their training and the enhanced ATC team takes shape, the airport is poised to continue serving its community with excellence and reliability.
