How Can I Find Out What Aircraft I’m Flying On?

For people who are into aviation, one of the exicting parts of flying is finding out what aircraft will be taking you on your trip.

On most booking websites, when you pick your flight online it will usually give you information such as departure time, location, date and the airframe type that will be operating the sector – This is usually defined by its aircraft identifier.

This is an example of what you would usually see when viewing flight information. in this case it is going to be a Boeing 767-300ER (Extended Range). Another was of working out the specific plane is if you look at the seating plan when you book your seat, it will show how many rows across, door locations and how many total rows front to back there is. Sometimes the airline will not say what equipment will be operating the flight but one thing you can do to help you determine is going onto seat plan wesbites such as SeatGuru and looking up the flight number or company and comparing the seating plans.

For people who are into aviation, you can take it one step more to find out about your flight. In the run up to your departure date, if you contact the airline you are flying with they may be able to tell you the aircraft registration which will be taking you on holiday. However, this is subject to giving a valid booking reference, passenger name confirmation for booking security. From experience of finding this information out in advance, the travel agents are always more than willing to find out this information so you may as well ask if you are curious! Just make sure you do not ask too far in advance as they may not know that information till closer to the time – At the same time the information may be suject to change on the day of travel due to operational changes/reasons.
