SQUAWK Codes

SQUAWK Codes

Let’s talk SQUARK.

In very simple terms squark refers to the communication that comes from an aircraft’s transponder or the radio equipment that a plane has that allows it to communicate with the radar system of air traffic control on the ground.

Who assigns these codes?

At the airfield the delivery controller will give an aircraft a SQUARK code which is entered into the transponder to visually display the aircraft on radar.

What about Emergencies?

However there are many other SQUARK codes that can be used for example emergencies & radio failure.

  • 7000 – VFR Aircraft with no callsign assigned
  • 7500 – Hijacked Aircraft
  • 7600 – Aircraft with Radio Failure
  • 7700 – Aircraft in Emergency Situation
